An evening with Seedrs Bitesize Pitches

An evening with Seedrs Bitesize Pitches

Seedrs is a crowdfunding platform connect investors with entrepreneurs, most looking for seed or pre series-A funding.

After an exhausting day on a client site for my I.T. work, I contemplated skipping the event but I decided to go to 'Seedrs Bitesize Pitches' at The Boutique Workplace Company. It was the right decision.

I didn't know what to expect of my first Seedrs event.

6.20 pm

Arriving just before the advertised start time, it was the kind of funky event space you'd expect to find in Shoreditch. A mix of chairs and sofas and a copper themed bar.

7.00 pm

A Seedrs organiser managed to get the hundred or so investors to quieten down and get seated.

Five companies presented in the order below and the format was simple.

  • 3 minute presentation

  • 3 minute Q&A

  • Introduction to the next founder

All views are my own and not investment advice.

Company 1 of 5 - Capital Rise

Uma Rajah, Co-founder and CEO

A multi-award winning online property crowdfunding platform making it easy for property borrowers to raise finance quickly and efficiently and offering Investors market-leading returns of 8-12% p.a from secured lending to prime real estate.

Clearly very knowledgeable in her field, she presented a solid company already offering reliable returns. It wasn’t solving a new problem for me because I already invest in funds that loan to developers.
— My opinion

Raising £1.5m | £16m valuation | will I invest - no |

Company 2 of 5 - Sherpr

Andrew Watson, Founder and CEO

Sherpr removes the hassle of carrying your bikes, golf clubs and ski equipment to and from the airport, helping you to save time and travel lighter at the click of a button.

Humble yet confident about their service and I’ve seen people struggling with golf bags, surfboards etc. Airportr transport luggage and I see Sherpr as an extension of that service. I really like the concept and can see it growing for aquisition.
— My opinion

Raising £110k | £3.6m valuation | will I invest - yes |

Company 3 of 5 - Holiday Online

Shameem Golamy, CEO & founder

Founded by former Head of Overseas for Rightmove, our mission is to capture the Holiday Listings Market in Coastal and Rural regions around the UK. We acquire private holiday lets from owners of single and multiple properties and market them online in return for a commission on bookings.

I’ve never rented with Airbnb but I get that rural homeowners might like an agent to do the online listing for them. Personally, Holidays Online didn’t feel scalable, the web domain was misleading and a competitor could enter the market very quickly and easily.
— My opinion

Raising £75k | £650k valuation | will I invest - no |

Company 4 of 5 - Aceify

Malcolm Graham, CEO and Charles Homewood, Co-founder

Aceify is a booking, scheduling and payment solution for sports and fitness lessons. The app makes it easy for sport and fitness lovers to book and pay for high-quality lessons, all from their device.

Essentially it’s an app to book tennis coaches and eventually other sports pros. For me, I didn’t see a unique selling point compared to other apps with services like personal training or private sports lessons.
— My opinion

Raising £200k | £2.5m valuation | will I invest - no |

Company 5 of 5 - Upgrade Pack

Urchana Moudgil, Co-founder and COO

Upgrade Pack is all about upgrades. We help our users access discounted flight and hotel upgrades, globally. We operate as a closed marketplace, exclusively serving the customers and employees of our clients; who use Upgrade Pack as the ultimate loyalty benefit.

The Seedrs presenter announced “last but not least”. She was spot on. This was my favourite pitch of the evening. Two of my passions are travel and tech; UpgradePack has combined these and offer discounts on airline upgrades. The team were clearly confident of their business model and I was writing a metaphorical cheque in my head.
— My opinion

Raising £500k | £12.75m valuation | will I invest - yes |

8 pm

There was now an opportunity to meet the founders over drinks and I waited in line to interrogate Urchana about Upgrade Pack.

8.45 pm

This was my time to hit the London Underground, still not fully recovered from Sunday's day trip to Dusseldorf and a subsequently busy few days of meetings with little rest bite.

A well organised monthly event and one I hope to attend regularly.
